Skids or Pallets – What’s the Difference?

One of the most common questions that we received when launching our website was about the difference between a skid and a pallet. At the end of the day, they both served the same function and purpose, right? So, what makes a skid a skid, and what makes a pallet a pallet?

Though they go by different names, skids and pallets have very similar functions throughout their life. Skids and pallets are raised platforms, on which goods sit on while in storage at a warehouse or other facility. From there, the skids – and the goods they support – go into storage until they are needed, with the help of forklifts and other warehouse machinery and equipment.

Skids and pallets share this common function – but that’s where the designation grows apart. “Pallet” is a generic term for any kind of platform that fits this description, and can be made of different, including plastic and paper. Skids, on the other hand, are specially designed pallets that are made to stand the test of time. Because of their multiple uses, diverse construction, and multiple applications, skids are the ultimate tools for your imagination. Use them to store your stuff, or build new stuff – the possibilities are endless!
